I'd like to thank [livejournal.com profile] cabellicious for pointing me to Bazooka. It really helped me de-ickify my machine. It detected four programs running, and I deleted them. Manually. I've learned a lot tonight.

Now, I have the latest Bazooka update, which is five days old. It scanned and said nothing was detected. Unfortunately, a pop up window started when I loaded my home page. It failed because it needed a specific dll file. (I should have written that down. I guess I can grab it the next time I boot up and log in.)

What do I do now?

Again, I'd like to thank Cabell. I've learned a lot today. I feel so much more confident as a troubleshooter now.

Well, I'm glad it helped--I hope the zonelabs thing above gets rid of any lingering ick. I actually only discovered Bazooka recently myself, when AdAware and Spybot Destroyer failed to get the eBates thing completely off my machine.

Another thing you can do just to cut down on irritation, if you haven't already, is get Pop-Up Stopper, which prevents pop-up windows from loading in the first place. The freeware version is a bit unforgiving, so you have to turn it off sometimes to get a pop-up window you actually WANT, but there are so many more of the other kind that I don't feel unduly inconvenienced.

Thanks! I've got dialup, which means this will take a while, but it'll be worth it.

Also look into CWShredder. It cleans off a lot of things that are specifically directed at your web browser.

Well, I downloaded it and tried to run it, but it won't run on Win95. It was a good idea, though.

I wonder what I have left that's plaguing me....
