A couple who got into a dispute over a theological point after watching “The Passion of the Christ” were arrested after the argument turned violent.
The two left the movie theater debating whether God the Father in the Holy Trinity was human or symbolic, and the argument heated up when they got home, Melissa Davidson said.
[...] According to a police report, Melissa Davidson suffered injuries on her arm and face, while her husband had a scissors stab wound on his hand and his shirt was ripped off. He also allegedly punched a hole in a wall.
“Really, it was kind of a pitiful thing, to go to a movie like that and fight about it. I think they missed the point,” said Gene McDaniel, chief sheriff’s deputy.

Date: 2004-03-20 12:12 pm (UTC)Thanks for clarifying that you weren't teasing. :) This topic is something that I've gone around in circles about enough that I wasn't sure.
When I approach questions about the Christian Written Scriptures I try to keep in mind that they are historic documents that have passed through many hands with many different intentions. I have come to the conclusion that - for me - it doesn't matter what was said - only what I find to be useful. I know that's blasphemy to some - but it's where I am.
So for me the question of whether "God the Father" is human or symbolic is purely a question of what one personally chooses.
"Didn't Jesus say I and my father am one or something so isn't Jesus an incarnation of God the father?"
Even if we knew for certain that Jesus said words that translate to basically that meaning - how you interpret it is still important. I could say that God is in me. Do I mean something different than what Jesus meant? I don't know.
Anyway - I'm not the right person to address if Jesus actually said that he and God the Father are one. But I still thought I would share my approach.
Good spiritual journey to you.
