I wish I could say that I'm surprised at the Teabaggers' (re)actions, but alas, I knew they were a racist movement from early on. The leadership knows that disavowing racism in its ranks would leave them with very few (zero?) supporters, which probably explains why they're going through all sorts of "but we're not really racist!" contortions that in fact simply prove just how racist they really are.
(...the thing that worries me is this is how Hitler eventually got enough power to institute Kristallnacht. Just a decade prior, Berlin was the epicenter of European queer culture, and Hitler burned that to the ground, too. The Nazi Party started as a radical fringe movement that eventually became mainstream.)
