I don't understand.

I pick up the phone, annoyed because it's the third time it's rung in an hour. The person on the other end asks for me. I answer, "This is she," then ask who it is.

It's the cousin of an old friend of mine. I'd run into him six weeks ago at the bus station. We'd chatted and I gave him my number, thinking he'd pass it along to his cousin. So imagine my surprise to discover it's him on the phone.

Eventually I figure out he's trying to find out if I'm free tonight. He says, "I was calling to see if you want to get into somethin' tonight."

Puzzled, I ask, "Like what?"

He says he doesn't know. I tell him I'm settled in for the night, but maybe later on in the week. We end the conversation shortly thereafter.

Please, someone tell me: what does "getting into somethin'" mean? Someone, reassure me that this man was not hitting on me.

I don't think he was directly propositioning you for sex, but he was definitely asking you out.

To me that phrase would mean getting something into you, as in drink or drugs. In what context did the friend know you, and has he blabbed to his cousin about your proclivities?
