This morning, I heard a DJ spell out the word 'fuck.' Then he asked his co-hosts, "Is it okay to spell it out?" And they said, "No. But it's okay."

The topic was about words that certain places/venues are trying to rub out. Apparently, the NFL is banning such words as "gay," "bin laden," and "nazi" on personalized jerseys. Also, Verizon Wireless is trying to find a way to keep words like "queer" and "fuck" from text messages. (Which is insane.)

George Allen is a senator from Virginia. He is hoping to launch a presidential campaign in 2008. He is up for reelection to the Senate this year.

This weekend Mr. Allen called a staffer for his opponent a racial slur.

Mr. Allen, in his "apology," is implying that he didn't know that it was a slur. But his mother is of French descent and lived in North Africa, where the term is used as a slur. It's hard to believe he didn't know what he was saying. He is quite rightly on damage control right now. (This includes the suggestion that "macaca" was a reference to the staffer's haircut, which Mr. Allen says looked like a mohawk but in reality is a mullet. In what reality does a mullet look like a mohawk?)

This DailyKos diary has more to say on the story.

Washington Post's editorial on the subject.
