I have yet to attend Top of the Park this year (or any of the years I've been in Ann Arbor, actually). In fact, I haven't been since I was in high school. So I brought up the prospect of attending last night when I phoned [livejournal.com profile] lameautarch. However, he works early and the movie, Dr. No, didn't start until 10:00 p.m. (Also, I'm not a big Bond fan.) So, instead, we rented Snatch, a movie I'd been intending to see since it came out six years ago.

My analysis: Good, and if I were more awake it probably would have been really interesting, with its twists and turns. But it still was not as good as its predecessor, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Lock, Stock is a movie I recommended very highly to friends when it first came out, and I still give it high marks. If you've never seen it, you should definitely rent it.

In an interview Friday with McClatchy Newspapers, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said he doesn't take the court's ruling to mean that those already being held would be off the hook simply because their rights were found to have been violated.

--Supreme Court ruling may ripple through other Bush policies, emphasis mine

Consider the implications of that.

This is the same reasoning that went into the recent 4th Amendment ruling. "Just because we didn't play by the rules [that is, follow the law] doesn't mean that the evidence we have against the bad guys shouldn't come into play."

Technical irregularities get people off the hook in our legal system all the time. The point is that the people who enforce the rule of law must be held to the rule of law.

At the very least, those being held without trial for so long deserve some sort of redress. I think they will get their day of reckoning.
