Jun. 10th, 2005 12:32 pmI was talking to my boss, asking about his son's plans for college. I asked him where he went to school. He told me he didn't, that he was a draft dodger. I said, "Really?" with a hint of respectful surprise in my voice. I explained that that wasn't really anything people of my generation had to deal with. He said that he was influenced by hippies when he was eighteen. I said that was cool. He disagreed with me, saying that he'd wasted his life. (Although, after our conversation, I was thinking, "You own your own business, have two homes in two different states, and drive a Mercedes. You also seem to have a close relationship with your son. I don't think you've wasted much.")
Just now I told him that I talked to the folks at my temp agency and they said everything is good to go. Nothing needs to be signed; they just need to be notified when my last date is. "All we need to do is talk about the particulars," I said. "Like what?" "Salary, benefits." "What are you talking about? Minimum wage! Benefits?" He likes to kid.
He's checking with our accountant and will get back to me with "what he thinks I'm worth." I know what I'm looking for. Hopefully my negotiation skills have improved in the last few years. I've done research, too; I know what the top end of salaries for receptionists is, so I don't think I'm looking for too much or selling myself short.
