I was out of commission for a couple of weeks, so I'm coming to the Obama/Wright story from behind.

I started with Obama's speech, declining to read any reviews or analyses of it beforehand.

Then I sought Jeremiah Wright's sermon that was at the center of the controversy.

I found nothing there that was so inflammatory, nothing that would have prompted Obama to give the speech that he did. But I guess that's what I get for not getting swept up in the media spin.

Edit: As others have pointed out, I ran across a different Wright sermon--however, one that was very cogent and uncontroversial. So, as for the one that is at question, can anyone tell me its name so I can search for it properly?

Further edit: [livejournal.com profile] ljdemocrats had this nearly 10-min clip of the "9/11 sermon".

It wouldn't be a political race without absolutely everything getting blown out of proportion and scrutinized until every last bit of potential controversy has been wrung from it.

Kinda makes you long for Britney Spears.

that's not the controversy. Five seconds. That's what the center is. It was hmmm July 22 2007. Right. Here is the clip

Ok to explain more. Nobody has ever heard the rest of that sermon on July 22, 2007. But that particular segment, specifically the god damn america part has been replayed for the past week, at least a hundred times a day.

It is what you call a sound bite in a sound bite world.

So you have avoided the media press that the rest of us have been subjected to for the past week.

It does not matter what else Jeremiah Wright said in his entire life, it does not matter who what when how, what matters is that one particular sound bite.

Pretend that is the only thing you ever hear from Wright. And you have heard it 100 times. We have finally reached the point where people are kind of bored of hearing god damn america, but it will be back in the fall when they crank up the swift boat operation against Obama.

You can see that whole speech, as well as the "chickens coming home to roost" sermon here: http://community.livejournal.com/obama_2008/616741.html

I think that the loops that they've been playing here and there are from about 3-5 or so different speeches.

Edit: sorry, I got the link wrong.

You missed out, it's been exciting.

You can listen to the mp3 of that speech (Audacity to Hope). I have a link on my journal. It's not particularly controversial, its significance is that Obama adapted the title for his book "The Audacity of Hope." It's no noncontroversial, that the media isn't interested in showing it to their viewers. They get more mileage out of a couple of minutes of impassioned and agry black man footage. I've noticed that even at times that the reporters are talking, they'll still have the video of "angry black man" running on the sidelines. It's a transparent attempt to scare white voters.

As others have pointed out, the "Hope" sermon doesn't have anything to do with the real controversy. It just let people use the sound bites of his angrier moments.

From what I've seen, I love Rev. Wright and agree with every word he said...except for the whole Christian thing.

But I'm an atheist anarchist socialist gay-loving hippie who should be rounded up and waterboarded in some Halliburton internment camp for my literal interpretation of the 1st Amendment, so who cares what I think.
