Spanking Kids Increases Risk of Sexual Problems as Adults -- found in [livejournal.com profile] feminist

"These results, together with the results of more than 100 other studies, suggest that spanking is one of the roots of relationship violence and mental health problems. Because there is 93 percent agreement between studies that investigated harmful side effects of spanking, and because over 90 percent of U.S. parents spank toddlers, the potential benefits for prevention of sexual and relationship violence is large," Straus says.

"Furthermore, because other research shows spanking is not more effective than other discipline methods, there is no need to expose children to the harmful effects of spanking. We can help prevent mental health problems and relationship violence from happening by a national health policy recommending never spanking," he says.

Aight, so, 1 and 2 might be a problem, but #3 is just enjoying kinky sex, and is in no way a problem unless it's non-consentual. And frankly, i'm confused by the fact that they say 90% of parents spank toddlers, and FAR form 90% of adults engage in coercive sex. Considering that the #1 sexual fantasy among women is GANG RAPE(!) i'm not surprised that so many individuals like being spanked, and see this as absolutely normal and healthy.

I agree with you. I don't know why the researchers included that as a focus. There is a difference between sexual violence and paraphilia.

At the same time, the data will probably intrigue other social scientists who will use it to triangulate their future theories.

How about this one for sex research

Students turn to sex work to help pay for university

HUNDREDS of university students in Victoria have turned toprostitution to pay their way through higher education, The Sunday Age has learnt.

Up to 40% of the female sex workers in Melbourne's brothels are attending the city's eight universities and other colleges.

Many of the women cite the costs of course fees, increased rentand a rise in the general cost of living for their decision to join the "oldest profession".

One 22-year-old Monash student, who has been working as a prostitute and escort for 18 months, told The Sunday Age:"In an ideal world I wouldn't be doing this work but it's well paid and there's no way I could afford to complete university and live out of home if I had any other part-time job."

The huge earning potential for these girls is the bigges tattraction of sex work. According to managers at numerous brothels across the city, a pretty woman can pocket as much as $1400 on a busy night.

Nearly all the brothels contacted by The Sunday Age this week admitted they had students working in their establishments. Many said that between 40% and 50% of their girls were in full-time education.
