I like Ann Arbor Commerce Bank. But then, convenience of ATMS is not an issue for me (they reimburse up to $10/mo) of atm fees anyway for using atms at other banks)
I love credit unions. They've got a co-op too, so if you sign up with one, you can use a variety of ATMs for free. They usually have all sorts of free goodness too and sometimes, you can get reduced rate Ren Fest tickets.
If you already have an account at a brokerage firm such as Fidelity, etrade, or Schwab check out their banking services. Besides having one stop financial services they'll pay your atm fees.
I have been pleased with United Bank & Trust of Washtenaw, although they don't have a branch in downtown A2. They do have one on South State, though, and allow use of other ATMs downtown. If you can qualify, I understand the UM Credit Union is pretty good. Places I work have used KeyBank, TCF and Ann Arbor Commerce Bank. Of the three, I would prefer AACB. I would avoid Chase and Bank of America, as they're in the middle of Merger Thrash and who knows what will emerge.
I generally choose my bank based on convenience, location, and the friendliness of the staff at the branch I interview. I do view it as ME interviewing THEM. "Hi, I'm looking for someone to take care of my money. Whose side are you on?" If they seem too officious, I'm out of there.
I've had an account with Comerica for nearly two decades and they've been good. I think most banks are pretty similar, though, but since I've had the same one for so long I could be wrong.
I should sit here and spout off about H&R Block Bank, but it's clearly not the best bank there is. It is a good step for people who don't have other accounts, but I can refer you to my Credit Union, DFCU Financial, formerly Dearborn Federal Credit Union. The closest branch office is in Canton, but there's a service center on Washtenaw, in the strip mall between Golfside and Carpenter. And you can do a fair amount of your business online.
