Canadian changes mind about Taser death: Police fatally stun man in airport less than a minute into confrontation
Activists march to get hate crimes prosecuted -- "These people." Might as well have said "Those people." Why didn't it say "These Americans"? (This is regarding the caption to the picture.)

Date: 2007-11-18 12:10 am (UTC)Noose hanging is a symbolic act that is deplorable in its intent, and implied meaning. Any person who hangs a noose should be arrested and charged with a hate crime. However there seemed to be an implication that the people who hang nooses should be punished as severely as someone who physically attacks another person. I am not sure I agree.
In regard to the six boys in Jena, LA being punished for beating up another student: The initial charges have been reduced from what the article says, and its possible the original charges may have been more severe as a scare tactic, rather than racist. Also, if it can be proven that the attack was racially motivated, then they should also be tried for a hate crime.
IMO the town of Jena like many others is not working hard enough to bridge the gap and celebrate their diversity instead of harboring resentment and mistrust. That should be the goal in places like Jena, rather than punishments. Harsher punishments are just going to cause further anger and frustration to either group.
What I want to know is why aren't organizations Like this getting more publicity and recognition:

*P.S. I didn't think the caption was racist either. It was poorly worded and should have likely said something more like:
Protesters outside the Justice Department in Washington on Friday.
But maybe my reality filter is not harsh enough?
