The article on abortion states, "Nor did the Catholic Church treat abortion as murder in the past." I've read at least one Roman treatise that characterizes abortion as murder. For example, "The Witch's Hammer" by Sprenger and Kramer of the 15th century denounces abortion as a murderous act.
The real issue is religious freedom. Do we live in a society where the dictates of Rome determine our civil laws? Unfortunately, in the area of family law, Rome still has way too much authority over us. They're doing their damnedest to turn the clock back on laws concerning contraception.
This site claims that the Church banned the book. (I say "claims" because I am deficient in my knowledge of the history of the Catholic Church, especially around that time period.)
As for the rest of what you say, I'm much inclined to agree with you.
Thanks for the pointer. It's interesting stuff on the "Hammer of the Witches" that I was clueless about. In thinking of reasons why the book was banned, I came up with a number of potentials. It is a rather lurid text that does not reflect well on the authors or their parent organization. It may have done more to cause sympathy for heresy than for its persecution.
Your response caused me to reflect on my previous assertion. I stand corrected. After all, any number of treatises by high profile Catholic writers does not constitute official Church policy.
Oops!
