A national black Republican group is running a radio advertisement accusing Democrats of starting the Ku Klux Klan and saying the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican, a claim challenged by civil-rights researchers.

As Eddie Murphy might say, "Can you believe this motherfucking shit."

I don't know about King, but most of the rest is probably true. In the 1860's, the Republicans were the liberal party. That mostly switched between Hoover and FDR, but southern democrats remained racially conservative until Johnson (I think -- maybe Kennedy) signed the Civil Rights act. Remember that Strom Thurmond ran for president as a democrat.
