Only 15 percent of heretics see themselves as heretics.

Interpretations: 1) Fat people don't know the numerical threshold of obesity. 2) They know it but don't want to admit they're fat. 3) We're getting so fat we've lost all perspective on what fat is. (For Human Nature's previous update on our slipping standards of fatness, click here.)

Or maybe we've demonized fat and obesity so much that no one wants to identify him/herself that way.

I'm more interested in what this may say about what Morpheus called "residual self image." It's commonly known that people who suffer from anorexia still see themselves as fat, even when they are skin and bones. What does this mean for body image? That we as individuals have a certain weight or size we see ourselves as, and that image persists even in the face of visual evidence? I don't know; I find it fascinating.

The author of the obseity inflation article neglected to take into account that the definition of obesity changed-- radically-- with the mainstreaming of the (absolutely spurious) concept of BMI. All it did was make more fat people where, the day before, they'd been considered a healthy weight.

Should they consider themselves obese? Erm... no.

Nah. I do.

But then, if something's been demonized, it's a pretty good bet that I'm somehow on board with it...
