In any discussion of race, it is always good to listen to the different arguments because, even if you don't agree, there is usually something to learn or some new point to consider. Too often, the stuff whites can't remember are the things blacks can't forget.

Great white nope

To play devil's advocate, and I rush to add I realize this is not always the case (certainly not among our elected officials):

Too often, the stuff whites can't remember are the things blacks can't forget.

Some of us do remember-- even those of us who weren't old enough to be around for it. For those of us that do, there's the problem of repetition-- which, inevitably, leads to the problem of desensitization.

There's "you can't win for losing," and there's "you can't win for losing." We're all fucked by fate, just in different ways.

"edited" for clarity:

"certainly not among our elected officials," rewritten:

Sorry, didn't want to seem as if I had any sympathy whatsoever for the morons currently in office.

I think folks quickly forget important history, white and black. Had a black teen who didn't know rock 'n' roll was created by black folks and then co-opted by people like Elvis.

His statement that rock is white folks music has some truth, but its an oversimpification, just like your post about a child saying white people get married.

I'm always frustrated when it seems like people are being hypocritical about race issues. Someone I know went out of his way to berate someone for using the n-word. (The person who used the n-word was trying to justify using it, because he wasn't using it to refer to black people. He was using it to describe people who might otherwise be described as "ghetto"... which includes all races.)

And then after berating this other guy, he posts in his journal about his neighbors who are Chinese, and how they call them the Wangs, and follows all these stereotypes. He's not being hateful, but he is laughing about it. And that just hits me the wrong way. It feels like he's trying to defend people from discrimination, but only certain people. And that bothers me. All people have to deal with discrimination.
