Proposal would outlaw consumption of Salvia Divinorum in Tennessee (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] psychonaut25)

I love this bit:

Strader, a Knoxville Republican, said he is uncertain about the specific effects of the plant.

"I don't know and I don't want our kids to find out either," he told the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. "The bottom line is it's not good for students."

those state reps sound mighty confused. Like they've been hittin' the hooch, or something. That Salvia must not be too potent if you're still allowed to decorate the patio with it.

Someone ought to write this guy and suggest, with a catalog of the horrors associated, they outlaw dihydrogen monoxide. I get the feeling he'd be way down with that...

????? Street name? by which they mean "what to ask for at home depo."

having a misdemeanor will alert kids not to do it? No. "Hey, we're broke, we're bored, but I heard if we chew on the plants growing on Timmy's porch, we can kill some time and have fun."
"how do you know?"
"well, theres a law against eating it, but not against having it, so it must be fun and not very dangerous."

wow. maybe some drug users should have been consulted.

Salvia is its own particular thing, and I give kudos to those who use it. I personally will probably never touch the stuff again.

Does it need to be scheduled? No. I don't agree with the Controlled Substances Act to begin with. Does it need to be approached with respect and care? Yes.

It seems that it's a knee-jerk reaction among conservatives to criminalize any type of mind-altering experience. They're afraid of the sixties happening all over again, I think.

Yeah. Lots of people die from accidents related to that stuff.

*chuckle* Yeah. Legislating things won't keep kids from doing something. I don't know why people don't actually try informing young adults so that they know all the pros and cons. Seriously. Teenagers are not stupid.

Knowledge is power. People have to learn how to make their own decisions.

I won't ever smoke that stuff again. Most unpleasant experience ever.

The traditional method of ingestion is chewing the leaves in what's called a quid (I think) that's left between the cheek and gums. This is left there for about an hour. Apparently, this method of ingestion is much more pleasant and not so frightening.
