when the hell are we going to be rid of him. chapline is a well known kook, here's a debunk:

http://motls.blogspot.com/2005/03/chapline-black-holes-dont-exist.html

as for that particular article, there are too many errors in fact for me to go into in any detail but we know that the dark matter can not be ordinary matter (by watching its effects on rotational speed of galaxies we can tell that it is far outside the visible disk of a galaxy -- it can not be normal matter for many reasons), the problems with black holes and "information" is an entropy problem which was solved I think by hawking. I guess it doesn't matter. Fiction gets reported as fact in all types of media, there's no way to really stop it.

Y'know, I was trying to remember when I read this if Newscientist was the somewhat less-than-reputable source for science news, or if it was something else. I seem to recall that it's not exactly known for checking its facts and getting the details right, but it's not something I regularly read anyhow. So, basically I'm not at all surprised. My first reaction to reading that article was skepticism, but then I'm skeptical about cosmology in general because it seems more religion than science to me.

well if you know any astrophysics at all you can tell this guy is full of crap, the problem is if you are media of any sort, and you look at credentials (rather than knowing the science) chapline several years ago was doing nobel prize level work on low temperature quantum mechanics crystal stuff.

It's only in the last few years that he's lost his marbles. I do blame newscientist for um, sensationalizing, I guess is the word, this guy's science. They must have had to shop around to find an astrophysicist who would take Chapline seriously.

I'm glad we've got folks here to set us straight. I don't know a lot about black holes or the evidence for them, but this guy seems to be throwing the baby out with the bathwater, since I do know we have some good evidence to support the existence of black holes.

Gotta say it's a fantastic concept - from the perspective of a fantasy writer...
