The most telling point to me is, "The governor declined all media requests for interviews Monday." If a politician can't or won't defend his policies under the light of public scrutiny, then perhaps those policies shouldn't be implemented in the first place because the public doesn't agree. Lots of politicians seem to forget that their priveleged positions (Magic reference intentional) are as PUBLIC FUCKING SERVANTS, not as dictators who force through laws that their constituents don't approve of.
