Where it says "Tribute to Teachers," it's really supposed to be "Tribute to the Twenty Minute Poem," because our web editor is a careless lazy fuck. And you can argue about whether or not they're substantial, or even decent, but it's a fact that they were all written in 20 minutes, as part of a national poetry seminar. So it is possible, you just have to let yourself not care too much about the results, which is really damn hard to do.
You're right. I've completed poems as part of exercises that were timed. In fact, in The Practice of Poetry, Rita Dove gives an exercise that's to be done in ten minutes. And I've had good poems come out of that exercise.
When I say "substantial," I'm not just talking about content or the quality thereof; I'm also talking about the length of the poem. I've been writing a lot of little pieces this month, but I'm not sure that's what I need.
