tiny-ish update
This place is a ghost town on the weekends, but I thought I'd make a small post anyway.
My dad got more MST3K through Netflix, so we'll be taking in Final Justice later today. I'm pretty sure I've not seen that one.
Also, I'm fairly sure I caused myself hypothermia yesterday, so despite the sunshine I think I will be staying in today. (I'm fighting the sniffles besides.)
I made it my goal to finish gleaning email addresses of all of the editors, managing editors & feature editors to which to send the press release I mentioned earlier by the end of the weekend. As far as I can tell, I'm about halfway there. The task is more tedious than I would have imagined. Still, I see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The side effect of the above task is that I'm discovering that Michigan has some interesting & odd names for towns. I like Fruitport. Descriptive & to-the-point.

late October
Today was a bit chilly, but the sun was bright & smiling, so I went for the walk that I wanted yesterday. I discovered a nature path just for residents of the apartment complex where my father stays, so I walked that (& found a picnic table that might be just the place to pen some new work). Then I turned out onto the sidewalk proper & had a nice brisk walk on a brisk day.
I'd just begun to perspire when I arrived back home. I felt great.

I really wanted to go for a walk today, especially as my mom (who's visiting) decided to make tuna noodle casserole. (I had about 1/3 of what I once would have had as a serving & loaded up on the broccoli.)
The temperature is in the upper 40s but the wind chill makes it feel like 40. That's rather cool. While cold usually doesn't bother me due to my Graves', I think I might just wait. It looks rather jaundiced out there.

the state of the toe
It's been less than a week. The swelling has gone down considerably. The bruising grew dark but never became black. I have been able to flex the bridge of my foot for several days.

lameautarch cared for me during these 4+ days, for which I've thanked him thoroughly. I convalesced in his four-poster bed, machine on my lap, whiling away the time playing ADOM, a game guppiecat introduced me to during our Grinnell days.
Yesterday was the first day I ventured outside. This meant wearing shoes. It was a gorgeous day, surely around forty degrees. I saw more than one person wearing shorts. So whenlameautarch and I were on our drive to drop me off at my dad's place, I suggested we dump my belongings and have him deposit me instead at the grocery store. I'd walk home. And I did, although I rued my choice a mite.

Oh. So that's what pain feels like.
I have either sprained or broken one of my toes (not the pinky, thank goodness). At the moment, the foot is elevated, the toe is iced, and NSAIDs have been ingested. At the outset, the pain is at a 6 or 7 on a 10-pt scale.
Anyone with broken toe experience have any pointers as to what to look for?

It appears that one of my medications, propranolol (a beta-blocker), is quite popular these days, for wildly different reasons.
Imagine my shock one night, watching The Rachael Maddow Show, to see propranolol implicated as the means by which Ramin Pourandarjani, a 26-year-old Iranian doctor who acted as a whistleblower on Iranian torture, was poisoned. In his salad, no less. (Check the transcript to see how many distinct manners of death were attributed to this doctor by the Iranian government.)
Today, in the library, I read "The Tireless Soldier," an article in a back issue of Adbusters (May/June 2008), wherein Clayton Dach states that the US military may soon use the med to counteract PTSD before it even starts:

My supervisor sent me home because I'm sick and stuff.
If I stay home tomorrow, at least they know I'm not faking.
(It was her idea to stay home if need be. However, I've three interviews scheduled tomorrow, and my supervisor would not be in to sit in for me. So... yeah.)

So I got to the dental school, waited, was received by a four-year student, got examined, winced a lot, had an X-ray of the culprit, waited, was told I couldn't have oral surgery today, waited, got a prescription, and eventually left.
I can go back in anytime this week when they open, and then who knows how long it will take them to extract the tooth.
I'm glad they recognized how much pain I'm in. It's nice to have that externally validated, you know?

Two blood blisters on the same finger in less than a fortnight. This time from carelessness with an umbrella.
