When you hear the words "Franklin Pierce," what immediately comes to mind?

A forgettable president and Alan Alda.

Former president, and "Is that a cousin?" (my mother's sister married a Pierce). A bit later on, "What was Hawkeye's given name, again?" Those are all of the references *I* get. :-)

One of the guys our current prez is battling for Worst President Evar, but I recently read a bio of Nathaniel Hawthorne that says Pierce was a loyal friend to Hawthorne.

Former President whose son was killed shortly before his inauguration and who spent most of his term in office grief-stricken. He was also probably an alcoholic. Considered with James Buchanan and Ulysses S. Grant as one of the worst Presidents of the 19th century.

The college.

The College, of course! (But then, I'm the parent of a college-hunting senior in high school. The fact that there's a decent college of that name way outweighs the fact that some distant memory suggests there was a forgettable president of that name.)

Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce.

Former US President, served 19th century, one term in office, responsible for sending Admiral Perry who opened Japan. Not a particulary note worthy President he was a dark horse candidate who carried the nomination and election. I believe he had time in the Senate and *ponders* won as a Whig.

is the franklin pierce anything like the prince albert piercing?

No.

Totally gay. Then I think, "No, wait, that was James Buchanan. Pierce was that totally forgettable and terrible president."

Pierce's VP (King) was actually Buchanan's roommate.

which is pretty much my reaction to anything right now and has more to do with my stomach than with the former president.
