I just finished listening to "Driver 8." Damned fine song.

Oh, I do love "Try Not to Breathe." One of the best songs from Automatic for the People.

Nightswimming; What's the Frequency, Kenneth?; and (tritely, sadly) It's The End of the World As We Know It.

But that last one is 'cause I can get a perfect score on it in Karaoke Revolution.

All of my faves are obscure: "Wendell Gee" (from Fables of the Reconstruction), "I Believe" (from Lifes Rich Pageant) and "little america" (from reckoning).

Yep, but I have to say, it was a damned close call between that one and Nightswimming. AftP is just pure gold all the way through (except for Ignoreland).

It took me a while to accept how very different Automatic for the People and Monster were. There's a sea change of sound between "Nightswimming" and "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?"

"Nightswimming" is one of their cleanest songs.

dionysus1999 and I were watching a Coldplay concert on TV the other night, and the band featured a couple songs with Michael Stipe, including "Nightswimming." Stipe's voice on that song is just strong and clear, yet understated at the same time.

I think, from AftP, my favorite is the very last song, "Find the River."

Even if the band disowns the song, I still love Stand. Orange Crush and What's the Frequency, Kenneth? both "stand" out for me at this moment.

Ya know, it's funny: the only time I've played it has been in Michigan. Go fig.

I'm witchoo on the shift in mode between the two. But "What's the Frequency, Kenneth" is so loveable that I had to include it.

Hey, have you ever been to Athens, GA? If you ever find yourself there, visit Go Bar, the bar owned and designed by Mikey Stipe. It's pretty swell, if a little pricey for the environs. And the music is fantastique!

Why am I not surprised that none of your favorite R.E.M. songs are ballads?

R.E.M. songs I have not encountered yet! What do you like about "The Great Beyond" and "Imitation of Life"?

well, I like "Stand", and I like "Everybody Hurts", which are very different songs. I think probably my favorite Michael Stipe performance, though, was when he joined the Indigo Girls in singing "Kid Fears" on their Indigo Girls album.

I'm not a huge fan of REM, so my favorites are mostly confined to hits, but here's three I like a lot:
