Funny what one will run into when doing internet research.

The expression "mad as a hatter" comes from the mercury poisoning prevalent in 17th century France among hatmakers who soaked animal hides in a solution of mercuric nitrate to soften the hair.

Oh, I haven't made baskets since I was in sixth grade. :)

I wanted to take Sculpture in college, but was never able to get into any of the classes (the upperclassmen who needed studio courses for their major got priority for those courses).

No, visual art never really appealed to me. Creative writing has always been my artform of choice.
