soda drinkers rejoice

Dr. Pepper is now available with real sugar as opposed to high-fructose corn syrup. I first saw this option at Busch's in a 12-pack carton, just this week. I don't know what other outlets across the US may offer it.

I've tried the Pepsi & Mountain Dew "throwback" drinks, & I've concluded that I just don't like them. There's an odd aftertaste that irks me. Part of me finds this interesting, as I am one of those people acutely attuned to the flavor of sugar--I can't stand any sugar substitutes (except stevia, & even that has to be unadulterated).

This recipe of Dr. Pepper is different from its Pepsi brethren, though. It actually tastes just like "normal" Dr. Pepper. Looking at the nutritional facts, I presume this fact is due to the higher content of sugars overall--one 12 oz. can has 150 calories mainly due to 40g (!) of sugar.

So, if you're on a low-carb diet, this beverage is not for you. However, if you're into the throwbacks, or just curious as to how a non-HFCS soft drink may taste, I'd recommend real-sugar Dr. Pepper, at least as a novelty.

There are more and more bottles of Mexican Coke (imported from Mexico, made with real sugar) around Seattle, I've even seen them in Bartell's, a local drugstore. We don't have Pepsi Throwback, as far as I know.

I understand that Mexican Coke is more expensive than the domestic kind, which is unfortunate.

Apparently, Coke makes kosher Coke around relevant Jewish holidays. This too is made with real sugar.

I was trying to explain to Nick my aversion to the "throwback" Mt. Dew as well. It Tastes like fake sugar to me, even though it's not.

I wonder how many others feel the same way. I really want to support non-HFCS drinks, but I can't betray my own taste buds.

Actually, one of the reviews of sugared Dr. Pepper mused that one of the things the soft drink manufacturers fear most is that their sugared varieties will outsell their mainstays. If that is true, then maybe it's not so farfetched to think Pepsi didn't want the throwbacks to outshine their "real" products.

It always has been available, in Texas. It's somewhat harder to find, but honestly my regional grocery chain has store-brand cola and dr-pepper-alike made with cane sugar which is clearly superior anyway.
