I've been monitoring other situations & conditions, but mainly this is the news story of the moment.

Missouri Gov. Nixon Declares State of Emergency, Issues Curfew in Ferguson -- I don't expect any real news about this for another half hour. That said, I think this was a wrong-headed move which will only bring about further unrest.

Ferguson unrest reflects decades of racial tension in St. Louis area -- I remember visiting St. Louis twenty or so years ago with close friends. Some folks tried to warn me that the St. Louis area was rather racist. I was disinclined to believe them. I went with my friends (to an Irish bar, on St. Patrick's Day, of all things); nothing went down, though I did feel a background unspoken bit of tension. Now, if someone were to issue me that warning, I would take it at face value & wish my good friends safe travels.

Missouri names officer who shot unarmed black teenager

New Details in Ferguson Killing Make the Police Look Even Worse -- As someone on dKos says, the press conference the police chief held was a "bait & switch": You want the name of the rogue officer; we'll give you misinformation about the victim. The chief later admitted that the officer, Darren Wilson, had no idea that Michael Brown had anything to do with anything untoward. Wilson just ordered Brown, "Get the fuck out of the street."

Ferguson police have explaining to do -- "The nation always seems caught by surprise when its racial fault lines are exposed. Incidents like this — really, they could happen almost anywhere — remind us of the anger that can quickly well up when people who feel they have no power, no authority, believe they have been abused by people who have power, who have authority."

Dear Johns: Actually, You Should Be Ashamed to Buy Sex -- There is a lot that is wrong in this article, or at least wrong-headed. The author (strangely enough, a woman) decries the industry by contrasting the relative freedom the customers enjoy (rarely prosecuted) with the restrictions sex workers endure (especially those trafficked into such work). The piece takes pot shots at everything, mainly casting aspersions. She does admit that "some woman [sic] do choose this line of work, and sex-workers unions argue that prostitution can be a freely made choice" but dismisses it in the same sentence. What the author fails to realize or acknowledge is that 1) it's not called the oldest profession for nothing--it's not going away, & 2) the illegality of the trade is the root cause of most of its problems. The best way to tamp down on most of the concerns is to pursue legalization or decriminalization, so the industry can be regulated.

Another 'Chokehold' Arrest Sparks NYPD Probe -- Both Eric Garner's & this man's encounters with police could have been resolved with a ticket & a fine. Why are the officers choosing to escalate these situations?

Sen. John Walsh plagiarized War College thesis -- It doesn't matter that you were "seeing two doctors and taking medication to deal with nightmares, anxiety and sleeplessness." That doesn't lead one to commit plagiarism. That was a conscious choice.

CHP Officer Who Hit Woman in Video on Desk Duty -- Pound a woman in the face a dozen times in eleven seconds, get paid time behind a desk. Oh, by the way, CHP says the woman was not hurt after being pummeled & left with bruises and "lumps the size of plums."

Obama float in July 4th parade in Nebraska brings accusations of racism | more

The former piece not racist enough for you? New York City newspaper refers to President Obama as racial slur in headline -- While the author is one to denigrate those who use such terms, there's a middle ground here. How about "Negro", which is still offensive & brings such connotations but is not so redolent in its offensiveness.

Diners believe a meal is tastier the more they have paid for it, say researchers -- Like The Dave Matthews Band once intoned, "You pay for what you get." (This may indeed be cognitive dissonance at work, where the consumer, having paid so much for the meal, convinces him- or herself that it must be worth the cost, because otherwise they would experience self-criticism for spending beyond the meal's intrinsic value.)

The Tin Ear of the #CancelColbert Brigades -- I presented pretty much the same argument when I was a student at Grinnell, when the campus became embroiled in a controversy regarding the campus' satirical rag. The argument is even more cogent in Colbert's regard, as he was in character when he made his remarks.

Lunches seized from kids in debt at Salt Lake City elementary: School officials cite unpaid balances on students' meal accounts | Utah school district apologises after meals taken away from pupils -- To really get to the depth of the story, realize that the students--elementary students--were served a full lunch, then had that lunch thrown away in front of them & replaced with fruit & a milk. The food could not be served to another student because of protocol. The food was wasted & then on top of that more food had to be expended to give to the kids. This was not just cruel but stupid.

Looking at photos online can change the way you eat -- "When people look at too many pictures of food, it can actually make the food less enjoyable. [I]t takes looking at least 60 images to feel that way[.]"

Court: Marotta is a father, not merely a sperm donor -- "A Topeka man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple is the presumptive father to a baby one of the woman bore and is subject to paying child support, a Shawnee County District Court judge ruled Wednesday." This ruling really should not stand, IMO. The women were not seeking child support but rather the state.

Reno police cite 5, arrest 3 men and women during prostitution sting -- This just strikes me as incredibly stupid. This is the one state in the Union where prostitution is legal & these people can't travel outside one of the few counties where the practice is unsanctioned? Talk about shortsighted. Seriously: taxi drivers would be happy to ferry customers to any of the licensed brothels, as they get a cut of the negotiated price for any rendezvous. There is no excuse, save being extraordinarily cheap.

Your pot or your gun? Medical marijuana smokers may have to choose -- This law is unconstitutional on its face. As one of the comments stated, "known alcoholics" don't cede their 2nd Amendment rights by virtue of substance use. Those prescribed oxycodone & other legalized forms of heroin aren't punished in such a fashion. I didn't know there was a way to get me to be a 2nd Amendment advocate, but apparently someone devised a controversy that's done precisely that.
