I've been monitoring other situations & conditions, but mainly this is the news story of the moment.

Missouri Gov. Nixon Declares State of Emergency, Issues Curfew in Ferguson -- I don't expect any real news about this for another half hour. That said, I think this was a wrong-headed move which will only bring about further unrest.

Ferguson unrest reflects decades of racial tension in St. Louis area -- I remember visiting St. Louis twenty or so years ago with close friends. Some folks tried to warn me that the St. Louis area was rather racist. I was disinclined to believe them. I went with my friends (to an Irish bar, on St. Patrick's Day, of all things); nothing went down, though I did feel a background unspoken bit of tension. Now, if someone were to issue me that warning, I would take it at face value & wish my good friends safe travels.

Missouri names officer who shot unarmed black teenager

New Details in Ferguson Killing Make the Police Look Even Worse -- As someone on dKos says, the press conference the police chief held was a "bait & switch": You want the name of the rogue officer; we'll give you misinformation about the victim. The chief later admitted that the officer, Darren Wilson, had no idea that Michael Brown had anything to do with anything untoward. Wilson just ordered Brown, "Get the fuck out of the street."

Ferguson police have explaining to do -- "The nation always seems caught by surprise when its racial fault lines are exposed. Incidents like this — really, they could happen almost anywhere — remind us of the anger that can quickly well up when people who feel they have no power, no authority, believe they have been abused by people who have power, who have authority."

My tomato plant tipped over.

Two branches came off, as well as twenty unripened fruit & seven semi- to fully ripened ones. That's almost half of all of what had developed on the plant.

Anonymous tweets the name of the officer in Ferguson who shot unarmed teen

Four days of protests probably could have been shortened or even avoided if the city had reacted the way New York did after Eric Gardner's death at the hands of the police. Trying to hide the identity of the officer only inflamed an already incendiary situation.

novapsyche: a young girl sitting with her fist up to her chin, her face turned away, ringed by a blue crescent (crescentgirl)
Tonight, on my way to a poetry meeting, a car almost hit me.

I was waiting to cross Main St., which, as its name suggests, is a pretty busy thoroughfare. The light changed & I had the walk sign. I looked to my left to make sure traffic had stopped in that direction, then I proceeded to cross.

Maybe the car directly alongside of me at the corner was about to turn right & was waiting for me to move out of the lane; for some reason, it was not advancing. So the guy in the lane with the traffic moving in the opposite direction decided to do a jerk move & turn left in front of it. Turning left ahead of oncoming traffic is illegal in Michigan. I'm sure the guy knew this.

By the time I was aware of this, I would have had no time to react, because he made the maneuver so quickly. I could just feel this increasing wave of anxiety/dread/fear penetrate my body as the car advanced.

Finally, he looked up & saw me. He stopped mid-turn in the intersection. I recovered myself & gave the shrug of "What gives?" Another driver honked. Through his open window, he said, "I'm sorry." I'm sure he would have said the same had he actually struck me.

I got to the other corner & turned toward the bookshop. I noticed that the car was hung up by a red light. Lots of good that move did him.

Dear Johns: Actually, You Should Be Ashamed to Buy Sex -- There is a lot that is wrong in this article, or at least wrong-headed. The author (strangely enough, a woman) decries the industry by contrasting the relative freedom the customers enjoy (rarely prosecuted) with the restrictions sex workers endure (especially those trafficked into such work). The piece takes pot shots at everything, mainly casting aspersions. She does admit that "some woman [sic] do choose this line of work, and sex-workers unions argue that prostitution can be a freely made choice" but dismisses it in the same sentence. What the author fails to realize or acknowledge is that 1) it's not called the oldest profession for nothing--it's not going away, & 2) the illegality of the trade is the root cause of most of its problems. The best way to tamp down on most of the concerns is to pursue legalization or decriminalization, so the industry can be regulated.

Lately, I've been trying to get back into the local poetry scene. There really isn't a scene, unless you're a young adult & into slam. But I was able to reconnect with a group that meets at a bookstore downtown (Crazy Wisdom) every other week. This month, even though they traditionally have no events scheduled for August, one of the informal leaders is going to convene the group. So I'm looking forward to that. It's a good mix of experience levels so the critique is useful.

Last night, I went back to a group that meets once a month at a bookstore just a couple of miles away from me. I hadn't been there since February & before that more than I remember. Part of this was due to my writer's block, part of it to the creative writing course I'd taken since September, which caused a scheduling conflict. Well, last night was really good, really fun. I took "Existentialism" (which they all seemed to like, to my amazement) & "Near Miss", whereupon I got some really incisive feedback. It was nice to see everyone again; it truly had been too long.

One of my former classmates from the creative writing class, Diane, put me in touch with the leader of another group that meets on a side of town I rarely visit but could probably make by bus. Diane talked her up & highly recommended her. Unfortunately, she charges for every session. I've never been part of a poetry group that did this, unless it was an official class. So I'm hesitant. I don't have the funds for that--I'd rather take that money & spend it on a subscription to Poetry. But the woman very graciously offered to waive the fee for one of her upcoming groups, so I will at least take her up on that & observe her teaching style.

Diane lamented the dearth of writing groups in the area specifically devoted to poetry. It's made me even think of resurrecting Thirteen Blackbirds. But I'm still not out of my writer's block. Also, most of my instructional materials were lost in the Great Flash Flood of 2009. In the meantime, I'm reading a lot more poetry & bought Richard Hugo's The Triggering Town for behind-the-scenes discussion of how poems become.

Remains of Jonestown Massacre victims found at Delaware funeral home -- The story of Jonestown still fascinates me, as I would have been a toddler at the time & so my parents would have shielded me from such news. (Although I was born in 1975, my parents didn't mention Watergate until I was in college. They've never said anything about the hostage crisis of 1979, when I would have been four years old.) How is it that this story is still making news? So sad.

When I matriculated to my alma mater, I was a good fan of Faith No More, who was introduced to me when I was a sophomore in high school. Their music was one of the major influences that got me into alternative music.

In 1996, Merril Bainbridge came out with "Mouth". It was a decent hit, making it to #4 on the charts, if I'm not mistaken. Good song for the moment.

Then FNM came out with "I Started a Joke" not a year later. It took me a while, but I synced the two artists together & figured out that FNM was making fun of the other's release of "Sleeping Dogs". How else was it that they were using the exact same lyrics?

Then it was to come to this year, when I had access to Grooveshark & found that both bands covered a song by the Bee Gees, a band that I have more than nominal respect for. Their songs happened to come out within a year of each other, which is why FNM's song seemed to be a parody. Now I know. Knowing is half the battle.

I'd been in the mood for a Philly cheese steak sub. But I didn't have the right kind of bread.

I did, however, recently purchase naan. So I decided to make a naan-style Philly cheesesteak pizza.

I sauteed the onions, bell pepper & mushrooms with a clove of minced garlic; slices of deli roast beef followed. I lined the naan with thin slices of pecorino & shredded mozzarella (as I didn't have Provolone), then topped it with the beef & pepper mixture. I popped that in a 400-degree oven for a few minutes, then added slices of fresh mozzarella on top; back into the oven for a few minutes more, until the cheese melted.

Now it's looking all gooey & cheesy & onion-peppery. I'm letting it cool a bit. Hope it turns out.

Edit: It's a good thing the only other thing I had to eat today was yogurt for breakfast. Wow, is this rich. I can just look at it & gain five pounds.

The taste is pretty good, but it's missing . . . something. Maybe some herbs, like dried oregano. Or some tang, a splash of vinegar. Something. Still pretty tasty.

2nd edit: Worcestershire sauce! That would be the thing to try.
